Murphy's Moments & ...Books - THE PILLARS OF THE EARTH by Ken Follett
In May I started reading The Pillars Of The Earth by Ken Follett. I remember Oprah making a huge fuss about this book a few years ago and recently I decided to see what the hype was all about. The book is not a quick read, its a little over 900 pages. The Pillars of the Earth takes place in the fictional town of Kingsbridge, England, set in the middle of the 12th century. It tells the story of a group of men and women whose fates are linked to the building of a cathedral, which becomes a site of bloodshed and treachery. Sounds pretty boring, right? Surprisingly this book is such a juicy read, filled with murder, mystery, courage, passion, deceit, love, sacrifice, and pain. It's a great work of fiction - a dynamic, fast-paced storyline that will pull you in from the first page. I found myself reading this book atleast 3 to 4 hours at a time-I just couldn't put it down. The story lines twist and turn, and just when you think things can't get any worse...they do, but everything comes full circle. I thought that I would be turned off by the story taking place in the 12th century. I thought it would have a Shakespearean diction, but the language and tone of the book was very modern and relevant. I would give an overview of the plot and characters, but its kind of hard to go into it with out spoiling the book.
On a scale of 5 stars if give it.... 4.5
